Dr Tanner has no illustrations, so I found an illustration of one of the places he mentioned in, of all things, Black's Guide to Scotland 1877.

Dr Tanner's full description of Malvern reads:

'Perhaps there are few more healthy and pleasant spots in the kingdom for a summer residence than this. Built on the declivity of the Malvern hills, situated 8 miles SSW of Worcester, the scenery is all that can delight the convalescent, or the man who is broken down from over-work. The air is pure and invigorating; and is well-adapted for bracing the system of such invalids as can bear an elevated site.

There are two springs in the neighbourhood which may be frequented for amusement. But the waters of St Anne's Well and of the Holy Well are only pure and soft; the very small quantities of muriate of lime, sulphate of soda, and carbonate of lime which they contain, being useless from a medical point of view'

Not quite what you find in your average tourist guide!Audrey Collinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17109060807297085410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4518232392780308567.post-3936044373256971942011-04-14T08:57:20.289+01:002011-04-14T08:57:20.289+01:00Interested to see the advert for The Imperial Hote...Interested to see the advert for The Imperial Hotel, Malvern as I grew up in Malvern. The 'covered way' from the railway station to the hotel still exists although now rather derelict (and I think closed off). In 1893 The Imperial Hotel became the Malvern Girls' College, and is now Malvern St James School. Some artistic licence used in the illustration though as the building doesn't actually face that way!

KirstyKirsty F Wilkinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05558508787388848119noreply@blogger.com
